Intent

In teaching History at Victoria Road Primary School, our aims are:

  • To develop an interest in the past and an appreciation of human achievements and inspirations.

  • To learn about some of the major issues and events in their own country and the world and how these events may have influenced each other.

  • To develop an understanding of the concepts of time and chronology.

  • To understand how the past was different to the present and the people of other times and places may have had different values and attitudes from our own.

  • To understand that events have usually a multiplicity of causes and that historical explanation is provisional, always retractable and sometimes controversial.

  • To stimulate the imagination.

Implementation

Throughout the year, we will be embedding the second year of our new History Curriculum ensuring progression and challenge for all children. This scheme of work for History is based upon the National Curriculum, It is topic-based and each topic will have clearly identified: key questions, objectives, learning outcomes and assessment opportunities, geographical skills and links with other areas of the curriculum. We look to provide children with hands on experiences such as visits, handling of artefacts and themed days in order to stimulate their imagination and bring learning to life.

Impact

A topic-based curriculum across both Key stages that shows an understanding of chronology and progression, which encourages children to have a passion for historical learning. We aim for all children to be able to talk confidently about their learning making links between periods of History and events.
