Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum
Our Subject Leader for MFL is: Mrs K Sowerby
Curriculum Statement
At Victoria Road Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language (MFL) is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. At our school, children will develop their MFL skills through the learning of French.
Intent
Our intent is to provide pupils with a high-quality, engaging French curriculum that fosters a love of learning language and develops their confidence, communication skills and cultural awareness. We aim to ensure that all pupils acquire a strong foundation in spoken and written French, developing an interest in and appreciation of other cultures. We aim for children to build transferable language learning strategies for future education and make meaningful connections between language, identity and the wider world. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils should be able to express themselves in simple French with growing accuracy and understanding of key vocabulary, demonstrating curiosity and enthusiasm.
Implementation
French is taught weekly in Key Stage 2 by a French specialist teacher using a progressive and well-sequenced scheme (Primary Language Network), aligned with the National Curriculum. Lessons will consist of repetition and retrieval practice to consolidate vocabulary and grammar. They will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills across units and songs, stories and games will be incorporated to build engagement. Assessment will take place informally through regular quizzes and vocabulary checks, followed by an end of unit assessment each term.
Impact
The teaching of MFL will meet the expectations of the National Curriculum. It will develop children’s confidence in communicating in a new language and enjoy learning French. Children will be able to retain and recall vocabulary and grammar with increasing fluency, preparing them for further language learning in Key Stage 3. Overall, pupils will leave Key Stage 2 with a positive attitude toward languages and an understanding of the benefits of multilingualism in a global society.
