Curriculum Statement
At Victoria Road Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language (MFL) is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. At our school, children will develop their MFL skills through the learning of French.
Intent
At Victoria Road Primary School, our Modern Foreign Language curriculum has been designed to develop a core of grammatical knowledge and vocabulary in French. The curriculum will ensure that pupils can apply to the learning of an MFL in KS3. Through a progressive curriculum children will develop language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the chosen language of French. The MFL curriculum will be taught to all pupils in KS2.
Implementation
The KS2 curriculum focuses on the key vocabulary and grammatical skills by introducing pupils to the concept of gender, plurals, word order and verbs through topics that have been carefully chosen to reflect the day-to-day lives of pupils. These themes include themselves, their family, schools and hobbies. In academic years 3 and 4 we focus on the speaking and listening skills for the language. In academic years 5 and 6 pupils are asked to develop speaking and listening skills further by learning key grammatical rules; and, begin to read and write in our chosen language of French. Learning is progressive and children will learn through song, rhyme, games and texts.
Impact
The teaching of MFL will meet the expectations of the National Curriculum.
The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
