Art Curriculum

Our Subject Leader for Art is: Miss L Fisher

Curriculum Statement
Intent

At Victoria Road, we aim to support all pupils need to meet the National Curriculum end of key stage targets.  In order to achieve this, we will:

Inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.

Provide opportunities to develop pupil’s abilities, talents and interests in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

Encourage pupils to express their ideas and thoughts about the world.

Learn about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond.

Implementation

At Victoria Road, we follow the Kapow Primary Art and Design and Design and Technology combined scheme of work.  The Kapow Art and Design scheme of work is designed with four strands that run throughout. These are: making skills, formal elements of art, knowledge of artists and evaluating. These strands are visited throughout each Art and Design unit.  Key knowledge and skills are revisited which allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.  Teaching staff are provided with planning, resources and CPD to support their lessons.  Differentiated guidance is available to ensure all pupils’ needs are met and therefore can succeed.  Pupils complete their work in sketch books and when necessary photographs are uploaded onto Seesaw.  Art and Design or Design and Technology is taught each half term.  We have a timetable in place to ensure all units are covered throughout the year for each year group.  Resources are audited and new stock is ordered each to ensure teachers have everything they need to deliver each unit successfully.  We aim to ensure all children visit an art gallery and meet an artist during their time at Victoria Road.

Impact

The impact of Kapow’s Primary scheme can be monitored through both formative and summative assessments opportunities.  Each lesson includes guidance to support teachers in assessing pupils against the learning objectives.  Each unit has a quiz and knowledge catcher which can be used at the end of the unit.

The expected impact of following the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme of work is that pupils will:

Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.

Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and design techniques.

Evaluate and analyse creative works, using subject specific language.

Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.

Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum in art and design.
