Geography Curriculum

Our Subject Leader for Geography: Mrs Taylor

Curriculum Statement
At Victoria Road we aim to keep geography on the map by inspiring and providing children with the tools needed to develop a deep and lifelong love of the subject.
Intent
At Victoria Road, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, its interconnectedness and their place in it. The geography curriculum at Victoria Road enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, substantive and disciplinary knowledge. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.
Implementation
The curriculum is designed to focus on answering a main key question. In order to achieve this, weekly lessons are broken down into key lines of enquiry with a specific focus on the substantive and disciplinary knowledge expected. This, we believe, ensures that teaching equips children with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As children progress through school, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge and skills are progressive and are sequenced to provide the framework and approaches that provide explanation of how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time. Knowledge organisers underpin children’s understanding of subject specific language, remind children of previous knowledge and provide visual and summative information on key knowledge to be learned. Questioning is used to promote different levels of thinking and challenges provided to provoke deeper thinking. The local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.
Impact
To know more! To remember more! To apply more! As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. Geographical understanding, as well as children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is embedded. Our Geography curriculum will also lead to children being enthusiastic Geography learners, evidenced in a range of ways, including pupil voice and their work. Upon leaving Victoria Road Primary School to embark on their journey to Key Stage 3 learning, children will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and understanding to confidently continue their geography learning journey.

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”- Sir David Attenborough
